Settlement Workers In Schools (SWIS)
What is SWIS?
SWIS stands for SETTLEMENT WORKERS IN SCHOOLS. It is a school-based outreach program that aims at helping newcomer students and their families settle in their schools and communities. It seeks to promote integration by bringing cultural awareness and understanding.
Partnership
SWIS is in partnership between Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division, Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division and Southeast Newcomer Services
SWIS
- Provides Orientation Workshop for Newcomers (OWN)
- Ensures timely referral to appropriate community services
- Arranges meetings with families and with schools and conducts follow-ups
- Promotes family involvement in the student’s school life
- Connects with students on an ongoing basis
- Assists newcomer families with school registration
- Attends school functions and staff meetings to promote the SWIS program
- Provides Peer Leadership Trainings to newcomer youth
- Arranges for interpreters, as needed
- Conducts home visits, as required
- Promotes active participation of newcomer youth in extra-curricular activities
- Provides Summer Programming
- Assists graduating students transition from school to work or post-secondary education
